How To Make Short Films
For
many new moviemakers, creating a short film is the point of pride. If you have
never made one, it's time to get started. Not only are there ample film
festivals offering a short film category to showcase your work, but you also
have the opportunity to touch a worldwide audience with free content
posting platforms such as YouTube.
Making
a short film with the technologies available today has become a fairly easy
undertaking for most people. You are pretty much ready to go, assuming you own
a reasonable computer, a digital video camera, and some sort of editing
software. Add a few decent actors, a simplistic script, and Voila! You're a
moviemaker! Here you know How To Make A Short Film
Create
an engaging storyline
Remember,
what most of the directors do is storytelling. So if this is your first attempt
to make a short film, think of a comedy or parody about a subject that isn't
too intense. With the sophisticated taste that most movie watching audiences
have developed, even on YouTube, it's often prudent to leave more humbling
ideas.
Building
characters
There
are several ways to create individual characters for every role; the practice is helpful when composing the final draft of your script. You may
have friends in the circle who could be great actors and if you don't
have any idea, ask around; see who's up for the challenge of enacting in
a short film. Also, don't forget that even though you might have just a
few protagonists in your story, you'll still need backdrop actors, set
dressers and production staff to help coordinate things on the filming
day.
Technical
aspects
'Once
all the stated "pre-production" work is accomplished, it's time
to get into the act, i.e., start filmmaking. Be sure that your camera batteries
are completely charged, and you have adequate tape for filming. Don't
worry about sequenced recording; The editing will fix it. Remember to be
careful not to unnecessarily 'cut' the scene—The
"spontaneous" acts have made into some of the best movies.
Also, don't forget to take close-ups and various angles of the same scene, so
you have ample footage while editing.
Edits
The final step is importing your clips to the system for edits. Use the editing
software to put the scenes in order. Use the best footage to complete a scene.
Start with 5 - 6 minutes of films initially to gain proficiency before moving onto
the bigger projects.
